INNOCENT:
Her Fancy and His Fact
by Marie Corelli (Pseudonym of Mary Mckay) London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1914). Contains publisher's first printing number statement: "Printed in 1914." Corelli, one of the first bestselling writers to become a star, inspired a book and a biographical film to be made about her. The British biographical film based on a book by Elizabeth Taylor, was ANGEL released in 2007. INNOCENT was the basis for the 1921 silent film in which Basil Rathbone made his quite successful motion picture debut. This novel is based on a true story about a young woman who moves to a fast-paced city, and adjusts to it's rough nature. Its major theme is the mistreatment of illegitimate children. Corelli also inserts into the novel, several pro-feminist sub-messages about women's choices not to get married. An important early novel by a woman writer ahead of her time-- yet adored in her time. Former owner's 1917 short inscription to the front endpaper, mild stain to the lower corner of rear endpaper, else very good in decorative binding in blue cloth with white embossed titles and with a gilt embossed flower swathed in dropping white petals to the front cover and to the spine, minor rub-wear to the spine ends and corner tips; in the scarce, good only dust jacket that is missing a 2 by 2.25 inch piece from the lower corner of the front panel, age-toned spine panel, heavy chipping to the upper and lower spine edges, a horizontal tear to the spine panel, and with short edge-tears and nicks.
